The Alaska Atlas & Gazetteer includes 149 quadrangular maps covering the entire state, as well as several city maps. The scale of the maps is 1:350,000 for pages 29-149 and 1:710,000 for pages 150-171?one unit of measure on the map represents 350,000 or 710,000 units respectively, of the same measure on the ground.
This atlas utilizes an equirectangular projection. Because of Alaska's northern geographic location, the longitudinal dimensions (width) of the pages will be distorted slightly wider or narrower than actual reality. The latitudinal scale (height) of the pages remains accurate. The projection is adjusted from south to north in four sections to diminish the longitudinal distortion as much as possible.
