Findings of the new, scientific archaeology do not generally contradict the conclusions of the pioneers, although they may refine the dating. It is still true that the first civilizations, marked by cities, governments, armies, laws, religion, and writing, arose in the Mesopotamian Valley between three and four thousand B.C. and at the same time or almost as soon (though without cities) in Egypt.
